Overall demand of the Windows industry

Overall windows demand is to increase from 49 million units in 2016 to 56 million units in 2019,  4% annual growth rate driven largely by new construction. While the majority of demand is comprised of replacement windows, this segment is projected to increase at just 3% annually while new construction growth is projected at 9% annually, as shown in the figure.

Freedonia research data explains the Windows industry

The Cleveland-based market research group, in a report issued July 29, pegged residential window and door demand in 2015 at $19.06 billion. That reflects annual growth of 5.9% since 2010, Freedonia said.

Demand for doors will rise 6.6% through 2020 to be worth $14.95 billion, it forecast. That follows five years in which demand grew 7.5% per year to be worth $10.84 billion by 2015.

The rise in demand for windows will be more modest, Freedonia believes: It predicts a 5.4% annual rise in demand to $9.0 billion. On the other hand, that’s speedier growth than the 3.7% annual increase in demand since 2010, a growth rate that put total demand at $6.91 billion in 2015.

“Through 2020, continued growth in new housing construction is projected to drive gains, as will an expected acceleration in demand for windows in improvement and repair applications,” Freedonia said in a news release. “Rising home values and increases in existing home sales will further boost demand in remodeling applications.”

Wood will figure in roughly 42% of the dollar demand for windows by 2020, mainly because of its dominant role in interior doors, Freedonia said. Look for plastic in 32% of the demand, and metal in the rest.

The advantages of aluminum windows in the category of windows

In new construction, “better” windows are replacing the “good” category in the classic “good-better-best” lineup, and aluminum windows are moving up among mid-tier and higher end products. Having more options to select from is a draw for the semi-custom and custom home markets where higher performance products like clad wood and composite windows have traditionally been selected.

Aluminum windows are now more mainstream accounting for 60% of all window units nationally. Manufacturers are pulling away from just focusing on starter homes and are putting increased attention on serving the custom home market. Although aluminum is still a strong product within the “good” category, aluminum windows are now also viewed as an option in the mid-tier and higher end categories. Common selling points for aluminum and composite windows include lower cost which can be half the cost of wood, scratch resistant, reduced warping, and eliminating the need to repaint. Although many alternative materials offer these features, pricing can be a major tiebreaker among selection criteria.

Window replacement is a trend

Principia’s research on the windows market has shown increased preference among homeowners for composite frames in replacement windows. The majority (55%) of homeowners reported replacing windows due to old age, and many are choosing aluminum and composites as the replacement material in place of what was originally wood. According to Remodeling Magazine’s recent 2016 Cost vs. Value Report, window replacement recoups just over 70% of the investment and total replacement can average between $14,000 for aluminum windows and $18,000 for composite windows respectively.

For replacement windows of all types, homeowners are focusing on energy efficiency, low-maintenance, durability, and style. When considering style for window replacement homeowners evaluate size, design, and curb appeal options. Color selection has increased in popularity over recent years as a considered style choice.

A recent article from highlights that homeowners can opt to have their windows upgraded with color, texture or even veneer. Historically white and off white have dominated in terms of color but most recently tan, gray, black red and green are increasing in popularity. Some manufacturers are even offering custom color capabilities. According to Window & Door Magazine, 39% of manufacturers added products in 2015 to expand their color options and 21% more planned to add new colors in 2016. Customization is critical in the custom homebuilding market and contributes to increased use of aluminum and composites in higher end homes.

What stimulated the demand of the Windows industry

U.S. Residential Windows Market Forecast to Rise 6.0% Annually to 2020.

Demand for all types of windows in the United Sates is projected to grow 4.8% yearly to $34.3 billion in 2021, according to a Freedonia Group study released Sept. 25.

“One key factor driving growth will be continued strength in new housing and renovation activity, including investment in new and replacement windows,” said the Cleveland-based research firm. “Expanding construction spending in window- and door-intensive commercial segments will also fuel sales.”

Demand for metal windows is also predicted to increase 4.2% per year to $13.5 billion in 2021.

In the commercial market, healthy growth in spending for office, retail, lodging, and institutional buildings will boost sales of windows, including automated products that adhere to universal design principles. Sales will also be spurred by building owners investing in high performance fenestration products to reduce utility bills and meet green/LEED building codes.

Freedonia reported early in September that the surge in hurricane activity in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean is expected to drive up the sales of impact-resistant windows. Those sales are expected to rise 7.5 percent per year through 2021 as new construction activity follows stricter building codes requiring better fortified structures.

These windows offer superior energy efficiency, noise reduction, protection from harmful UV rays, and added security from burglary.

People's environmental awareness drives the Windows industry

As people become more aware of environmental protection, they will also stimulate people to consume environmentally friendly windows. After nearly 30 years of history, the environmental protection door and Windows industry has now become an ideal industry in the home building materials industry. In the current market for environmentally friendly windows, consumers’ love is always the first, and it affects the fate of environmentally friendly windows enterprises. Among the environmental protection windows enterprises, there are not many production enterprises with scale, R & D strength and devotion to building their own brands. In order to meet consumers’ demand for environmentally friendly windows, for environmentally friendly windows companies, they need to achieve product innovation, channel expansion, marketing changes, brand building, etc. In addition, the convenience of the online sales model has also brought about the development of the Windows industry. The online sales model has become the new favorite of environmentally friendly door and window companies in the cold market, and has truly developed e-commerce to the Windows industry in the Internet era.
